Tongits uses a standard 52-card deck and is played by two to four players, though three players is the classic setup. The goal is simple: get rid of all the cards in your hand, or have the lowest unmatched card value when the game ends. Each player starts with 13 cards (or 12 for a four-player game), and the rest form the draw pile.

  • Draw a Card On your turn, draw the top card from the deck or pick up the last discarded card. This is where strategy starts — sometimes your opponent's discard is exactly what you need.
  • Meld Your Cards Lay down sets (three or four of the same rank) or sequences (three or more consecutive cards in the same suit) on the table. These are called "melds" and they reduce the total value of cards still in your hand.
  • Sapaw (Add to Melds) You can also add cards to melds already on the table — including your opponents'. This "sapaw" move is one of the most exciting parts of Tongits because it lets you chip away at your hand even when you can't form a full meld yourself.

  • Declare "Tongits" or Call a Fight Go out by discarding your last card and declaring Tongits for an automatic win, or call a "Fight" (Labanan) at any time when you have melds on the table. The player with the lowest unmatched card total wins the fight.
